Timberland Co has been a pioneer in minimizing its environmental footprint while getting others to engage in eco-friendly initiatives. Production begins with using recycled material whenever possible; for example, Timberland converts 50 tons of discarded tires into outsoles annually. Timberland has also announced it will achieve carbon neutrality by 2010. With two LEED certified retail stores and wind, water, and waste powered distribution centers, Timberland has cut down significantly on energy use and reduced carbon emissions by an estimated 480,000 pounds annually. Each footwear product now contains a "nutritional label," detailing how and where the product was manufactured as well as its effect on the environment. In addition, the company offers a grant program that awards $3,000 to its employees, aiding the purchase of any new hybrid electric vehicle that meets Internal Revenue Service and Environmental Protection Agency standards. Timberland has also initiated a "Plant a Tree" application on Facebook, in which any user's virtual tree that reaches adulthood will be matched by Timberland with a real tree.
